2016 saw a major refurbishment of the studio including a complete redesign of the recording space.
Custom built by leading Studio design company Studio People with quality & flexibility in mind Distant City Studios boasts
- An abundantly stocked large Control Room.
- 2 Live Rooms each acoustically designed and tailored to have their own sonic characteristics.
- Vocal Booth.
- 2 Isolation Booths for Guitar Amplifiers.
- Echo Chamber.
- A double height drum room with motorised ceiling to adjust the room size to preference.
Every bit of space in the studio has been considered for every possible recording scenario. Additional to the above room choices DCS offers up the possibilities of throwing up a microphone in literally any other part of the studio you can imagine, and yes that includes the bathroom. We even put a microphone plate on the external wall of the garden entrance.
The double height drum room has attracted a lot of attention for its unique design, The motorised ceiling offers the possibility of changing the drum room size as the drummer plays underneath. There is an option to fix 6 microphones into the motorised ceiling.
The design was a long labour of love for Worthington who has spent many years dreaming up his perfect recording studio environment.
'Ever since I was 6 years old I have been fascinated by music and the concept of record making. From a very young age I would listen over and over again to my favourite records trying to understand the sounds, imagining the creative process and the spaces that they were recorded in. I've always been enthralled by artists and producers who create their own very distinctive sonic signatures. And that's something that I strive to do every day at Distant City Studios.'
Worthington's background is that of a songwriter, composer and music producer of many diverse acts.
As a music producer Worthington has worked for over 15 years with a great variety of acts including Steve Chrisanthou, Callum Beattie, The Dunwells, The Orielles and on the critically acclaimed comeback record by seminal Punk Group 'The Membranes 'Dark Matter / Dark Energy.'

'An outstanding return' NME
Membranes frontman John Robb was equally thrilled with the results. ‘I recorded my critically acclaimed album with Joss at Distant City Studios in Yorkshire and it was a real pleasure. The album encompasses a diversity of styles and sounds that I had in my head and I found it very easy to work with Joss who was very professional and had a really well run beautifully appointed studio that made the drums sound fantastic.
Nothing was too awkward or off the wall with him and I don’t like to work in conventional ways. Most of the reviews remarked on how great the album sounded which is rare in my type of music and a lot of the credit to this can be put down to Joss.’
Recent studio projects include recording the fourth Album for Lanterns On The Lake (Bella Union) and the follow up to 'Dark Matter / Dark Energy' by The Membranes (Cherry Red Records)
Joss has also studied and worked with luminary Music Producers Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Shins, Morrissey) Andrew Scheps (Adele, Metallica, Lana Del Ray) and Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey).
